Medina EC - Business of the Month
Medina Electric Cooperative
May’s Business of the Month by Cotulla-La Salle County Chamber of Commerce
Medina Electric Cooperative has been in existence since 1938 and started providing power to the Frio and La Salle counties in 1941. Today, Medina EC serves more than 32,000 meters across 10,750 square miles in 17 South Texas counties. As a not-for-profit electric cooperative, it is owned by almost 18,500 members.
Providing safe, affordable electricity is key to the core business model of the cooperative. However, being a part of the community is equally important. Some of the different ways the cooperative supports its members and the communities is by donating backpacks for different back to school events, sponsoring little league teams, supporting the livestock shows and public libraries.
Medina EC has awarded seven retired co-op trucks to volunteer fire departments since 2015, over $557,000 in educational scholarships since 2000 and has provided electrical safety demonstrations to countless school aged children, first responders and community members.
Medina EC members, directors, employees and individual donations have supported giving back to their neighbors through the Operation Round Up program. Since 2006, co-op members have donated over $130,000 to individuals and organizations throughout the 17 counties. Help has been provided to individuals who are fighting illnesses or lost their home in a fire, and organizatons like food pantries and children’s shelters.
“By giving back to our communities, we are supporting our members. We are proud to not only provide power to our members but also to empower our communities to grow,” said Mark Rollans, CEO.
