The Cotulla airport was constructed in 1947. In 1988 the airport situation improved when the local EDC persuaded Page Aviation to move to Cotulla and provide services to the public, especially to hunters and other visitors. The Pages established a residence on the airport for better security and customer service, the runway was repaired, and trees and brush were cleared away from the runway.

Noting the substantial traffic, in 1991 Cotulla received a $1.8 million grant from TX DOT-Aviation for a longer and wider runway and an expanded aircraft parking area. In 1996 the runway was extended to 4,600’ using local resources to accommodate jets. After jet traffic increased adequately, Cotulla then received a $2.9 million grant to construct a 5,005’x75’ runway and more parking; this project was completed in 2005. Large-aircraft traffic continued to grow and in 2009 Cotulla was approved for a $6.5 million grant for a 6,005’ runway, parallel taxiway and more parking; the project was completed in 2015. In 2016 the Cotulla Airport received the Texas General Aviation Airport of the Year award, firmly establishing the Cotulla Airport as the aviation hub for this entire area.

Plans are underway now to begin construction this year on a new 4,200 square foot terminal, which is about five times larger than the current terminal, as well as a privately-funded hangar and other major infrastructure improvements.
